The thematic exploration ‘About Rain’ that BA has taken on for 2019 into 2020 was a continuation of her fascination with the landscape since her solo show in 2016 at the William Humphreys National Gallery, titled: Fragments of Land.

For two years BA measured and documented rainfall from her studio in Port Elizabeth at Art on Target. The interpretation of rain into an image has sparked her to explore three avenues. In some cases these avenues overlap each other in some images.

Representative images of rainfall – These works include literal representation of cloud/landscape with the ‘rain gauge’ measure inclusive in the image in the form of a symbolic representation of a millimetre of rain based on the co-valent bond between hydrogen and oxygen. Sample: November Rains.

Scientific relationship between molecules – This is BA‘s area of research and includes working drawings and ink studies on the relationship of hydrogen and oxygen molecules as well as the covalent bond that exists between them to constitute water and interaction with land, people etc.

Abstract interpretation of the effects of rain – These works deal specifically with the effects of rain on land, activating that land into productivity. The circuit board of a pc or electrical device is a key influence of these works. The interpretation is an imaginative look at the earth as a circuit board that has been activated by rain.
